Definition

Drug resistant epilepsy has been defined by the International League Against Epilepsy as a failure of adequate trials of two tolerated and appropriately chosen and used AED schedules (whether as monotherapies or in combination) to achieve sustained seizure freedom. This is a working definition, but is clearly imperfect.

There is evidence that in some people, further changes to anti-seizure medications can result in seizure freedom.
