Aetiology

BPPV is thought to be caused by calcium carbonate crystals (otoconia) within the semi-circular canals (otolithiasis). Otolithiasis most commonly affects the posterior semi-circular canal (85-95% of cases). The next most commonly affected canal is the posterior canal. The anterior canal has been reported to be affected but this is the least common.
