A variant of motor neurone disease with lower motor neurone dysfunction of the limbs only. In those with progressive muscular atrophy at onset spread to the bulbar muscles of the emergence of signs of upper motor neurone dysfunction may lead to recategorisation as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
