Definition

Fasciculations are commonly identified in healthy people with no evidence of a neuromuscular disease. When fasciculations occur in the absence of any other evidence of neuromuscular disease this is termed benign fasciculation syndrome.

Individuals may be concerned they have a neurological disorder such as motor neurone disease after identifying fasciculations and reassurance can be helpful.

Open questions

In most people with benign fasciculation syndrome fasciculations are mild. In some people though more florid fasciculations are noted. It is not clear whether these people are at increased risk of developing a subsequent neurolomuscular disorder.
